England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
